Simone pushed open the door and then slammed it closed, breathing like a steam engine going uphill. Pressing her body against the wood, she gulped huge breaths, trying to still her heartbeat. She heard then saw her brother’s head peer around the corner at the end of the hallway.

“Whatcha doing?” he asked with a smile.

“I was playing over at the house of the new family, with Stephanie. Her dad was cooking bacon on the grill so the house wouldn’t smell like a bacon cheeseburger. It smelled so good we wandered over to see if we could get a piece after her dad went in to check on her mom. We approached the plate with the cooling bacon when a couple of stray dogs with no collars showed up. I think they wanted some too.”

Trevor moved closer. “Uh-oh, what happened next.”

Stephanie’s dad came out and chased them off with a broom. Those dogs must’ve been starving. They came right back and wouldn’t leave. Stephanie’s dad pushed her inside and told me to go home. Then he took the bacon plate inside.” Simone studied her feet then looked at her brother. “I guess I should have asked to go inside, but I was tired and wanted to come home. I didn’t count on the dogs following me because I smelled like a big hunk of bacon. I tried to get away, but as I started to run, so did they.
