Simone flumped down on the couch next to Trevor, her glum face replacing her usual smile. Trevor asked, “Why are you sulking, Simone? You can tell me.”
Simone’s bottom lip pushed out as she looked up at him. “It’s not fair. Boss’s birthday is coming up soon. I don’t have anything saved to get him a nice present. I shouldn’t have bought the candy and balloons last week. I can’t buy him anything.”
Trevor rolled his eyes and remarked, “I tried to remind you not to spend everything you’d saved. But I get it. I spent most of my allowance too. I hope Boss will like what I have for his birthday.”
Simone peers up at him with a ray of hope. “You got him something? May I go in with you and pay you later. We can say it’s from both of us.”
“I’m afraid not. All I can afford is a handshake. You’ll have to do your thing.”
They stewed about their predicament with only the sound of the grandfather clock ticking away.
Trevor shifted and exclaimed, “Hey, I never told you, but when I was little, Boss built treasure hunts. They were fun. You and I can build a treasure hunt for Boss’s birthday.”
