Simone absentmindedly wound her long auburn hair around her fingertips that moved like she was playing the harp, focused outside on the waves encroaching on the shore. The sounds of the water muffled through the closed window.

Trevor approached and stared at the shoreline. Bumping her shoulder, he joked in a sing-song manner. “Too wet and cold to play outside, so we sit here we two with nothing to do. Simone and Trevor sat inside. We sat there we two a little bit blue. We sat, and we sat wishing there was something to do.”

Simone faced him with a smirk. “Trevor, you always have something fun to say. I was thinking and wondering, why do we call them Boss and Annie? Why don’t we call them dad and mom?”

Trevor offered a weak smile as he explained, “They’re not our mom and dad.”

Simone’s eyes opened and filled with tears, and her skin paled. “They aren’t?” She snuffled. “Who are they? They take care of us. We all play together. Why aren’t they mom and dad?”

“Yeah, I know it’s kind of hard to understand. I think of them as parents, but we’re adopted. They asked to care for us.”

“I don’t…uh…what…?”

Trevor exclaimed, “I never told you, but I remember the day they brought you home. You were so little when they asked if I would help take care of you. I felt sorry…
