I Never Told You But

Simone turned at the sound and rushed to her brother’s side. “Trevor, are you alright?” she implored. “Please don’t be dead, I couldn’t bear it!” She shushed the dogs and grabbed their leashes.
Trevor slowly rolled to a sitting position. He blinked, but his eyes appeared unfocused as she looked at him. He mumbled, “Why am I lying on the street with the dogs licking and whining at me?”
Silently sending up a prayer of gratitude, she inhaled and slowed her exhale. She patted his arm and scanned for wounds. “Thank the lucky stars, you’re alive.” She gently brushed the debris from his shirt after commanding the dogs to sit. “You don’t appear wounded, just a little dirt here and there. What do you remember before crumpling to the ground with a thud?”
“Thii lisntsiaon tinsa iitios…”
“Trev, stop teasing me. Your words don’t make any sense. Take some time and deep breaths.” Pulling on the pups’ leashes, she secured them with her feet. The dogs momentarily settled. “I’ll keep the hounds under control so they don’t pull you into the street.”
He shook his head, and she noticed his eyes appeared to clear and his facial lines smoothed. Looking confused, he asked, “Was I in the street? Did I get whacked by a car? Boss complains folks drive too fast down our street.”
