I Never Told You But

Sweat beaded on Simone’s forehead, and her bangs moved in damp clumps as she huffed her breath. “Great gobs of Geronimo gravy, Trev. We can’t go outside for another fifteen minutes ’cause the sun is on top of us. Boss won’t let us turn on the A/C until two.” She fanned her face with a worn magazine. “I’m cooking even in my swimsuit. I don’t remember two weeks of hot like this.”
Trevor studied the calendar he intermittently used to fan himself. “I never told you, but we had thirty days of one hundred plus one year. There were hardly any breezes and no rain. It’s July. It is hotter in August and lasts through the end of September. That’s when the Fair of Texas opens. During the beginning days of the fair, it can get so hot that people keel over from the heat. Toward the end, sometimes, a northern front blows in, dropping the temperatures with lots of rain. You can bake one day, then scramble for sweaters the next. You’ve heard Boss talk about Texas weather. If you don’t like it, wait 20 minutes.”
Trevor laughed, and Simone pursed her lips while she stomped her feet. “Oh, great. We get another harsh month to sweat through or more before it cools. The city closed the local pool early because someone broke a couple of glass bottles during a late-night party. Boss reminded us never to bring glass bottles around any pool because they have to drain it to get all the pieces so no one will…
