I Never Told You But

Trevor methodically searched the house room by room until he found Simone in her closet under all her stuffed animals. The finger on her pursed lips signaled he must stay quiet. He noticed the anxious worry in her eyes as she waved him inside.
He scooted next to her as quietly as possible. Leaning close to her ear, he whispered, “Whatcha doing? You only hide under your stuffed animals when it’s thundering and lightning outdoors when you’re scared. The sun’s out. What’s wrong?”
She kept her voice low and said, “Don’t make me listen again. Boss has pitched his speech so many times that I’m afraid I’ll have nightmares. I know it’s important to him. As much as I love Boss, I can’t take another round of practice. It wouldn’t be so bad if I knew what all the words meant, but all it sounds like is technical gibberish. If I don’t say it’s great, he’ll read it again saying, see if this sounds better. Argh!”
Trevor chuckled. “I never told you, but Boss has always been this way. He’ll practice his speech on us until we know it by heart like him. The worst time was when he was interviewing for a job. We had to roll play with objections that he gave us to say. Annie got mad and stomped off, leaving me to be the inquisitor. When he gets this way, Annie goes to the store for some odd item, saying she’ll be back in a while. One time, she left and stayed with a friend…
