Trevor heard noises above his room and rushed to the open attic door. “What are you doing with those? They belong to Annie.”

Simone, startled at his voice, offered a crooked smile. “Nobody’s using them, so I thought I might try them on and learn how to skate. They look cool, all black and shiny.”

His mouth emitted a clucking sound as he added a shake of his head. “You wig-out if someone plays with your stuff, but you think it’s okay to mess with other people’s things without permission?”

She focused on the skates that settled onto her foot after tossing her shoes to the side. “Help me lace them up, will you?”

He closed his eyes as if hoping for divine intervention. “We’re in the attic with two flights of stairs to get outdoors, and you want to put on skates here. Were you planning to skate down the stairs? I suggest you find a flat practice area and then put them on. But not without permission to play with them.”

Pouting and appearing to consider the comments. “I hadn’t thought about getting down the stairs. Anyway, Annie’s at work, and I didn’t want to wait until she got home. Please?”

Trevor clucked his tongue. He grabbed the gym bag and held out his hand for the items. She quickly popped them off and handed them over. He added them to the bag then turned to exit. He heard…
