I Never Told You But

Trevor sensed Simone was upset with the angry turn to her mouth and tears filled to the brim. Since he could not think of a thing he’d done, he wrapped his hand over her shoulder and gave a slight squeeze.
Simone protested, “Trevor, they said I was too small to be on their rowing team. I used my new deck shoes that Annie bought me so I wouldn’t slip getting in or out of the boat.”
“My adorable and competitive sister,” consoled Trevor, “you’ve got some growing to do before the rowing team can accept you. I heard this past weekend that two White Rock Lake rowing groups placed in the U.S. Rowing Central Youth Championships with a meet in Oklahoma City. White Rock Lake is where middle schoolers start practicing for competing in the nationals. The coach is probably drowning in applicants ready to train with the best in Dallas.”
Simone sniffed and rubbed her eyes. “I want to train with the best, too, Trev. They wouldn’t let me try out.” Trevor nodded and patted her shoulder. “Then, a sweet lady rower pulled me aside and said the same thing happened to her when she was my age. She told me, ‘go practice now and come back stronger. They like seeing determined young ladies that won’t take no for an answer.’ That’s what I need to do.”
