I Never Told You But

The sun was ebbing toward evening, but the days were getting longer. Homework as the priority meant they would get little outdoor playtime tonight.
Simone glared at her brother and complained, “I don’t know why they make us learn mathematics on paper when we have computers. I can type faster than I can scribble it down on paper.” She rolled her eyes and looked at the ceiling. “Plus, they want all the steps and carryovers. Argh.”
Trevor chuckled. “I never told you, but Boss told me he said the same thing after his college math class. The instructor was annoyed that not everyone completed the assignment because artificial intelligence was the fad of the moment. Everyone wanted to use it to get ahead.” He laughed aloud before continuing. “She challenged the students to compete with his computer on one of the problems. The professor grinned and said, ‘I propose a test of your skills against my computer to prove a point to the rest of the class. Since only Satya and Auri in the front row completed the homework assignment, you can use the basic theorems to solve complex polynomial equations.’ Move your seats so you can face the main screen. Here’s the problem.’ And the class began.”
“She pitted the class against a computer?” Simone asked. “That doesn’t seem fair.”
