Trevor watched the wonder bloom on Simone’s face.

“Trev, aren’t these baby chicks the cutest things?” Simone muttered. “And listen to them, cheep, cheep,” she giggled. “Gad, how cute can you get? Can I pick one up?”

Trevor grinned at her delight. “Of course, you can pick ’em up. Be gentle, cradling them in your palms. Don’t squeeze too hard ’cause they’re fragile. They’re less than a week old.”

Simone carefully retrieved a black box and brought it close to her face. “Look, I’m giving her butterfly kisses with my eyelashes.” She lifted each and batted her eyelashes on the chick’s wobbly head, like a kiss, until one poked her eye by mistake. “Ow.”

Trevor recovered the pale-yellow chick before Simone dropped it from the poke.

“Trev, I wouldn’t have dropped her. It just startled me. Honest.” She picked another and noted their soft texture. “Why did Boss bring all these little guys here? Are we taking care of them for someone while they travel?”

“Boss brought them here as a food source.”

Simone recoiled in horror. “You can’t be serious!” she gasped. “No, we can’t eat these cute babies. These are going to be our friends. You don’t eat your buddies.”

He chuckled as he filled their small water bowl. “No, my adorable sister, Boss didn’t…
