I Never Told You But

Simone stomped and kicked the dirt, sending chunks toward her brother. “Trevor, our garden got whacked. We did just like you said and waited until after the ideas in March. You never mentioned the ache of April twenty-eight. Out of the blue, the temperatures dropped to the killing zone. How do you explain forty-degree temperatures at the end of April? All our veggies and even the pretty flowers we planted are brown and curled. We are in Texas. Good grief, tomorrow is May Day.”
Trevor frowned as he surveyed the former thriving garden with shoots that were green yesterday and growing like gangbusters. “It’s called The Ides of March. According to Wikipedia, the 74th day in the Roman calendar corresponds to the fifteenth of March. The date marked several religious observances, plus a deadline for settling debts in Rome. However, 44 B.C. marked the assassination of Julius Caesar, the emperor of Rome. Boss claims that since the Ides of March was a turning point in Roman history, it should also mark the beginning of the spring growing season.”
She raked away a few small sticks blown onto the garden from the heavy winds. “Will Boss allow us to buy more veggies and flowers? It wasn’t our fault. I don’t mind doing the digging and replanting again. Maybe we can cover up the stuff in case Mr. North Wind gets blustery again.”
