Simone stared at the hopeless wreckage of their new above-ground pool and grumbled, “That didn’t turn out the way I intended, Trev. I thought all chocolate labs loved the water. I believed he’d like this better than rushing the surf on the beach because we wouldn’t have to wash the salt water out of his fur. Ugh!”

She watched the frown increasing on his face, worried he’d shout.

“Simoneeeee, it’s not fair, Trevor moaned, “that you and Manfred wrecked the pool before I tried it. Boss and I spent hours setting the pool up to hold water. We’ll never swim in this again.”

“I didn’t know he’d panic when I dragged him up the stairs and pulled him in. He growled at the top step but didn’t snap.” She giggled, “One thing for sure, he knows how to do a cannonball. Whoosh. He jumped in with a thump, and gallons of water covered my head.”

Trevor chuckled. “That makes me feel better. Come on, let’s find Manfred. You can say you’re sorry. We’ll give him the pizza crusts in the fridge.”

“Hey,” Simone protested, “I’m saving those for Diablo, the Toucan we’re babysitting. When Cindy dropped him off, she said pizza crusts would make Diablo come to me. And he does.”
