I Never Told You But…

Trevor entered the living room and halted. He’d been captured by the movements. “Simone, what are you doing?” he complained.
Simone recoiled at his tone but didn’t drop the object even as sun rays from the window caught the fathomless black shine. “But it’s such a nice shiny stick,” She frowned. “I wanted to see how it felt and if I could balance it. Don’t you love the bright splashes of color on the smooth surface?”
Shaking his head and wrinkling his brow, he approached. “I never told you, but that’s Boss’s katana sword. He loves that item. You’ve been told not to touch it. We both have.”
Trevor retrieved the artifact, taking great care as he set it back on the stand. “I don’t want you in trouble for handling it as I did. It didn’t always look like this. Originally it was a worn wooden case.” His fingertips traced the grip. “It didn’t have this beautifully laced handle. I found it in the front closet one day. I thought it was a smooth stick I could play with when I discovered it comes apart.” Trevor looked around and cocked his head to listen. Confident they were alone; he picked up the stick. “See. It slides open, and inside is the shiny metal blade.” The revealed metal edge caught the sunbeams and showered the room with rainbows from the scalloped edge.
