Trevor bumped Simone with a bucket of cleaning implements. “Come on. We’re on cleanup duty.”

She lowered the book he interrupted and wrinkled her nose at the bucket contents. “What cleaning duty? We just got finished with everything in the house.”

Trevor nodded. “We did. Now we need to clean Daphne and Chloe, our fountain mermaids.”

Simone frowned; her eyes appeared thoughtful. “I thought Boss said he would clean them after cleaning the hot tub.” She leaned up and looked outside at the eight-foot water feature. Moving her book to get a clearer view of the eight-foot fountain. “They look pretty grimy. Boss is right; they need cleaning. How did it become our job?”

Trevor sighed. “Boss had an accident. He asked me if we would do it.”

Simone appeared perky. “Do we get extra allowance for the cleaning? It’ll take an hour, maybe more, to brush the green junk off their frames.”

Trevor tilted his head. “I never told you, but Boss doesn’t promise extra money when he asks for a favor. He was helping Annie change the bed sheets and accidentally slammed his foot into a table leg. He jammed his fourth toe, and he walks funny.” Trevor scrunched his face and blinked several times. “It’s all black and blue.” Trevor looked away as if seeing the scene play in his mind. “It hurt when he did it…
