Trevor spotted Simone walking toward the den and caught her attention. He motioned for her to join them in the living room with a sign to stay quiet. He pointed toward the window where Boss and Annie looked outside. Simone crawled up soundlessly next to her brother.

She faced the large garden area but looked confused. “Hey,” she whispered, “what’re we looking at? That lady next door isn’t outside with no clothes again, is she?”

Trevor leaned over and pointed toward the birdbath. “Do you see the big black bird on the rim? He’s perched there for a while but isn’t drinking water.” He got closer to her ear. “Boss said he was in the front yard near the driveway this morning when he walked the dogs. Usually, crows fly away when people get close, but this one took a few steps and stopped. The dogs didn’t pay any attention. Boss thought the bird’s behavior odd.”

Simone nodded and tilted her head. “I see another crow on the other side of the bath, but he’s thirsty. Over by the bird feeder, there’s another one probably eating the stuff the blue jays kicked out while grabbing the corn.”

Boss drew a heavy sigh. “Something’s wrong with Chief.”

Simone quietly asked, “Trev, what does Boss mean?”

Trevor sighed and moaned, “I never told you, but Boss can see things others may not. The big crow…
