I Never Told You But

The orange orb was just like the picture on the card, only faceless. Simone found it cool to the touch, with a smell of freshness as she cuddled it in her lap. She looked up with her big blue eyes and squeaked her admission. “I’ve never stabbed a pumpkin before, Trev, or anything else. But everyone at school is talking about carving up a big pumpkin, taking the innards out, creating faces on the front, and putting lit candles inside to make it look spooky at night. Won’t that hurt the pumpkin?”
Trevor patted her shoulder. “My adorable sister, I never told you, but we used to do that here at the house around Halloween and keep them as decorations until Thanksgiving. Boss got into pumpkin carving, and he often had a dozen. He’d line them up out front and light them to show each with a different face or theme. People came by to take photos, and some asked if they could have any for their homes. You know how folks add lights to their houses at Christmas, and everyone has to look? Well, that happened here. The car and foot traffic got so jammed up to see the annual pumpkin creations that the police had to help direct traffic on trick-or-treat night.”
“No kidding?” Simone looked at her brother and marveled, “Boss used his wood carving skills to carve faces and characters on pumpkins. How fun.”
