I Never Told You But…

Trevor ran like the devil was on his heels, hollered over his shoulder. “Run, Simone, Run!”
Simone slogged behind; the driving rain caused her feet to slip before she tripped and fell into the indentation. Crackles of lightning with the accompanying booms of thunder from above added to her tormented state. She struggled to stand and started down the soggy beach in his direction and screamed, “Trevor, don’t leave me! I’m scared!”
Trevor fought his fears and pulled up to help. He reached her side after a short jog. His squall jacket and hood repelled most of the rain, but her light cotton pullover acted as a sponge in the unexpected deluge. “Simone, take my hand. Let’s go. We don’t want one of those long skinny pieces of light to tag us.”
Crying and drenched to the bone, she wailed, “I can’t run anymore! It’s my fault we went too far down the beach. I should have listened when you said a storm’s coming. Don’t leave me!”
Trevor paused and pulled off his waterproof jacket. He held it over the two of them as a makeshift umbrella. “Hold onto one side of this.” Holding her hand in between them, they started back down the beach. “Good, it will keep the rain out of our eyes.”
“Trevor, you’ll get soaked too! Put the coat back on.” She protested as she kept up with him better. “I’m alright now that you’re nearby. I…
