As he neared the kitchen, Trevor heard his sister singing one of her favorite holiday tunes, Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer. He slowed his pace and peeked around the doorway.

Using the wooden spoon as a microphone, dancing with her dark wavy hair bouncing, she hit the last note, and their eyes met. “Boss is letting me help with the Thanksgiving preparation. I’m cutting up the sweet potatoes.”

He raised an eyebrow and cocked his head.

She shrugged and grinned. “Well, sort of. They’re hard as rocks. Boss won’t give me a sharp knife, so I get to peel them and he hacks them. He uses that big meat cleaver. It’s exciting right before he brings down the axe, he yells Hassan Chop. He cuts them into pieces, but they often fly across the kitchen. My job is to retrieve them and wash them again before he does another Hassan Chop. Makes me laugh.”

“Yep, he makes cooking fun.” Trevor studies the kitchen. “Looks like another ham for Thanksgiving. Did Boss say how he was going to cook it?”

She wrinkled her nose and picked up another potato to peel. “I figured he’d use the big roasting pan and pop into the oven. Trev, why don’t we have turkey like most people?”

He sat on the barstool and watched her work. “I never told you, but one time, Boss came home with a turkey and a rented propane…
